Custom Knives in Texas — FAQ

What knife laws apply in Texas?

Texas has some of the most permissive knife laws in the US. Since 2017, most knives — including Bowie knives, daggers, and blades over 5.5 inches — are legal to open carry. Some restricted locations remain (schools, courts, polling places). Location blades (those over 5.5 inches) have specific rules about restricted premises.

Does Louis Martin ship Bowie knives to Texas?

Yes — we ship our full Bowie knife lineup to Texas. Our Damascus Bowie knives are extremely popular with Texas collectors and outdoorsmen.

Are balisongs (butterfly knives) legal in Texas?

Yes. Since House Bill 1935 took effect in 2017, butterfly knives are legal to own and carry in Texas like any other knife. Blades over 5.5 inches are still restricted in certain locations such as schools, bars, and hospitals. This is general information, not legal advice.

Are switchblades and OTF knives legal in Texas?

Yes. Texas repealed its switchblade ban in 2013, so automatic knives including OTF (out-the-front) knives are legal to own and carry, subject to the same location-based rules that apply to blades over 5.5 inches.
