The Law in Detail
Key statutes: Ind. Code §§35-47-5-2, 35-47-5-2.5, 35-47-5-12
Indiana repealed its ban on Chinese throwing stars effective July 1, 2023, leaving them restricted only on school property. Ballistic knife possession and knife possession on school property are Class B misdemeanors punishable by up to 180 days and $1,000. The state constitution's requirement of uniform criminal law acts as de facto preemption, which puts Indianapolis Municipal Code §451-1's "sharp objects" restriction on questionable legal footing.
