Custom Knives in Missouri — FAQ

What knife laws apply in Missouri?

Missouri has permissive knife laws — most knife types are legal to carry. There are restrictions in specific locations (schools, government buildings). Concealed carry of knives is generally permitted without a license in Missouri.

Are butterfly knives illegal in Missouri?

No. Butterfly knives (balisongs) are legal to own and carry in Missouri. The main caution is concealed carry: Missouri treats knives other than an ordinary pocketknife with a blade of 4 inches or less as weapons under its unlawful use statute, so carry a balisong openly or keep concealed blades at 4 inches or under. This is general information, not legal advice.

Are OTF knives legal in Missouri?

Yes. Missouri legalized switchblades and other automatic knives, including OTF knives, in 2012, provided possession does not violate federal law. The same 4-inch guideline for concealed carry applies.
