Custom Knives in Wisconsin — FAQ

What knife laws apply in Wisconsin?

Wisconsin has some of the most permissive knife laws in the country. Since 2016 Act 149, there is no state prohibition on any type of knife, including switchblades, and no state blade-length limit. Restrictions remain in schools, courthouses, and for anyone prohibited from possessing a firearm. Local ordinances can add rules, so check your city.

Are butterfly knives illegal in Wisconsin?

No. Butterfly knives (balisongs) are legal to own and carry in Wisconsin, openly or concealed, since the state repealed its switchblade-era restrictions in 2016. Schools and courthouses remain off limits. This is general information, not legal advice.

What size knife is legal to carry in Wisconsin?

Wisconsin sets no state blade-length limit: any size knife is legal to carry for a person not otherwise prohibited from possessing weapons. A few local ordinances impose their own limits, so check municipal rules if you carry a large fixed blade in a city.
