What Is AUS-8 Steel?

AUS-8 is a stainless cutlery steel produced by Aichi Steel Corporation in Japan. It has been a staple of production and custom knives since the 1980s, and its recipe is simple to read in plain terms:

  • Carbon, around 0.75 percent. Enough to harden properly and take a fine edge, not so much that the steel turns brittle or chippy.
  • Chromium, around 14 percent. This is what makes it genuinely stainless. Anything above roughly 12 percent free chromium qualifies, and AUS-8 clears that bar comfortably.
  • Vanadium, a small addition. This is the quiet advantage of the AUS series. Vanadium refines the grain structure, which means a cleaner, more stable edge than most steels at this price point.

There is also a little molybdenum and nickel in the mix for hardenability and toughness. Typical working hardness lands between 57 and 59 HRC, which is exactly where a tough, easy-to-maintain stainless wants to live. How AUS-8 Performs

Here is what three decades of grinding, heat treating, and field feedback tell us about this steel.

It sharpens fast. This is the trait people underestimate until they own one. An AUS-8 blade goes from dull to shaving sharp in a few minutes on basic stones. No diamond plates required, no fighting stubborn carbides. For anyone still learning to sharpen, that feedback loop is worth more than an extra day of edge retention.

It is tough. At 57 to 59 HRC with a fine, vanadium-refined grain, AUS-8 flexes and springs back where harder steels chip. Lateral stress, light prying, hitting a knot in wood or a bone in the kitchen: AUS-8 shrugs off abuse that would leave a visible chip in a high-hardness steel.

It is properly stainless. With around 14 percent chromium, AUS-8 handles rain, food acids, sweat, and humid sheaths without complaint. Wipe it down and it stays bright.

The trade: moderate edge retention. AUS-8 will not hold a working edge as long as D2, ATS-34, or modern powder steels. On a long deer processing job or a full day of cardboard, you will strop or touch up sooner. That is the deal. You give up some time between sharpenings and get back toughness, corrosion resistance, and effortless maintenance.

AUS-8 vs D2

This is the most common matchup we get asked about, and it is really a question of two different philosophies.

D2 is a semi-stainless tool steel: around 1.5 percent carbon and 11 to 12 percent chromium, most of it tied up in big, hard carbides. Those carbides are why D2 holds an edge noticeably longer than AUS-8, and why it is a favorite for hunting and heavy-duty work. They are also why D2 is slower to sharpen and why it can show patina or light spotting if neglected, since not enough chromium is left free to make it truly stainless.

AUS-8 flips every one of those traits. It gives up edge-holding but resists rust far better, sharpens in a fraction of the time, and tolerates lateral abuse more gracefully.

Our honest steer: choose D2 if you cut for long stretches between sharpenings and will keep the blade dry and oiled. Choose AUS-8 if your knife lives around water, food, or humidity, or if you value a five-minute touch-up over a twenty-minute session. AUS-8 vs AUS-10

AUS-10 is the top of the same Aichi family, and the difference comes down mostly to carbon: roughly 1.0 percent in AUS-10 against 0.75 percent in AUS-8. That extra carbon lets AUS-10 harden further, take a slightly finer edge, and hold it meaningfully longer.

The cost is a little forgiveness. AUS-10 runs harder, so it is marginally more prone to edge chipping under abuse and takes a bit more effort on the stones. It remains an easy steel to maintain by any modern standard, just not quite as friendly as its little brother.

On our benches, AUS-10 has actually pulled slightly ahead, 84 pieces to 65 in the current catalog, because buyers who love the AUS character often step up for the extra edge life. If you like everything about AUS-8 but want more time between sharpenings, AUS-10 is the natural upgrade, especially in hunting knives that need to get through a full field-dressing job on one edge.

AUS-8 vs 8Cr13MoV and the 440 Class

Honesty matters here, because marketing copy tends to blur this comparison. AUS-8, 8Cr13MoV, 440B, and 440C all live in the same broad class of mid-range stainless steels. Nobody should tell you AUS-8 is a category above them, because it is not.

8Cr13MoV was designed to mirror the AUS-8 recipe, and on paper the two are near twins. The practical difference is lineage and consistency: AUS-8 comes from a single Japanese mill with decades of tight quality control, while 8Cr13MoV varies more from batch to batch depending on who produced and heat treated it. A well-treated 8Cr13MoV blade performs close to AUS-8. The word doing the work in that sentence is “well-treated.” With AUS-8, consistency is simply easier to trust.

Against 440C, the ledger reads like this: 440C carries more carbon, so it takes higher hardness and holds an edge somewhat longer, while AUS-8 is a touch tougher and quicker to sharpen. We run 81 pieces in 440C for exactly that reason. Comparable class, slightly different personalities.

What AUS-8 Is Best For

Matching steel to job is most of the game. AUS-8 shines in:

  • EDC folders. Pocket knives get sharpened often and carried in sweaty pockets. Easy maintenance plus rust resistance is the ideal recipe, which is why so many of our folding knives run AUS series steel.
  • Kitchen work. Acidic food, constant washing, frequent honing. AUS-8 was practically built for the cutting board.
  • Wet environments. Fishing, boating, rainy-climate hunting, camp chores in the damp. This is where D2 owners get nervous and AUS-8 owners do not think twice.
  • A first quality knife. If you are moving up from bargain-bin blades and learning to sharpen, AUS-8 rewards effort quickly and forgives mistakes.

A truth we have repeated since 1993: heat treat matters more than the name stamped on the steel. A properly hardened and tempered AUS-8 blade will outcut a badly treated blade in a steel twice its price, every single time.
